Find the Space Between the Trees

Finding Stability, Purpose, and Hope in an Unstable World

There comes a moment in many lives when the pace finally slows enough for us to hear our own thoughts.

For some, it arrives through retirement. For others, through loss, illness, failure, disappointment, or the quiet realization that the person they have become is not quite the person they once expected to be.

After spending decades in the military and intelligence communities—always moving, always responding to the next mission, the next challenge, the next responsibility—I discovered that I had no framework for what came next.

I had spent a lifetime navigating external instability.

I had never learned how to navigate my own.

The metaphor that eventually emerged was that of a forest.

At some point, all of us find ourselves there.

Sometimes the trail remains obvious.

Sometimes we lose it entirely.

Sometimes the forest is shallow enough to cross in an afternoon.

Sometimes it stretches on for years.

But everyone walks among the trees.

The purpose of this newsletter is not to offer simplistic answers to complex problems. Rather, it is to explore what it means to build stability in unstable times. Together, we’ll discuss purpose, resilience, identity, grief, hope, faith, responsibility, aging, transition, and the surprising truth that none of us navigate these landscapes alone.

I don’t write as an expert standing safely outside the forest.

I write as a fellow traveler who has discovered that even in the darkest stretches of woodland, there are clearings where we can rest, gather strength, and continue the journey.

The forest is universal.

But it is not endless.

There are spaces between the trees.

And perhaps, together, we can learn to find them.
